It was a little less windy and a bit warmer compared to the last few years, but defending Metro Player of the Year Brian Gerken continued his dominance of the Metro's opening event at Chippewa, as his even par round of 71, was good enough for his 3rd victory in 4 years at this event (he was 2nd the other year). Gerken, with nines of 35-36, that included 4 birdies, withstood challenges from Brett McBride (who was also 2nd last year) with nines of 36-36 72 and Brian Simmons (2nd, 3rd, 1st, and 2nd last 4 yrs) who bogeyed the 1st five holes, but rebounded with 6 birdies for 37-35 72. Kevin Skomer and Mark Augustyniak tied for 4th with 74's.
In the net division, Kevin Skomer shot an actual 2-under 33 on the front nine (net 30) and had a 3 shot lead over Tom Leyman after 9 holes. However, Skomer bogeyed the last 3 holes and Leyman was able to garner a tie for the net division, as both had net 68's. 4 players were on their tails and finished tied for 3rd with net 69's-Chad King, Dan Cannon, Scott Conrad and Mike Smothers.
Misc facts-the Kennedy brothers won 3 of the 5 closest to the pins (Mike 2 and Jim 1). Tony Reams with a chip-in on the long par 3 fifth hole and a long putt on the 11th hole swept the skin pot winning $285.00
